New Porsche Macan Turbo Electric Review | Does Winter Hurt Its Range & Performance?

The Porsche Macan Turbo Electric has a big problem.

With a 639hp output, it’s obviously more performance focused than other electric SUVs like the BMW iX3, Audi Q6 e-tron and Tesla Model Y. But there is already an EV on the block that can claim to have similar performance bragging rights, and that’s the hatchback-shaped but SUV-sized Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. So has Porsche been beaten to the mark?

That’s not even the main problem. That actually comes from this twin-motor super SUV’s sibling, the petrol-powered Macan GTS (formerly Turbo), which costs £22k less than the £96,900 Macan Turbo Electric, is 500kg lighter and, of course, makes lovely V6 noises. The GTS is immensely popular, as is the wider petrol Macan line-up, with 800,000 units sold so far. So how can the new Macan Turbo Electric compete..?

Well. For starters, the Macan Turbo Electric is the most potent version of Porsche’s junior SUV yet. 639hp is impressive, but it’s a 1,130Nm torque output that’s raised most eyebrows, not least because it’s 300Nm more than a 911 Turbo S produces. Sure, a near-2.5-tonne kerbweight does ensure this all-wheel drive Macan needs 3.3 seconds to hit 62mph (still ruddy quick). But Porsche knows a thing or two about bending the rules of physics.
