Sthal Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi –

The universe Savita and her girlfriends live in, is beautifully observed by Somalkar. Harr baar as a new boy comes home, a new towel emerges for the family to wash their hands with, sticker still intact on it, so they KNOW its new, no one has touched it before, virgin if you may, like the girl being offered to them. When at college studying sociology, a teacher talks to Savita and her class about feminism, women empowerment, writing the words “naari sashaktikaran” only to a chalkboard that’s been stuck on top of an old chalk board that’s still visible on the wall behind it. The professor is simply layering theory over a reality unchanged. Oopar oopar se sjaa lijiye, peeche se sab wahee purana chal raha hai tradition ke naam par.

Watching in an airconditioned movie theatre will make the bitter irony of it all also clearer. Savita and her friends look at photos of celebrity couples on their phones – Viky Katrina, Virat Anushka, Ranveer Deepika, people who have SOLD them Bollywood dreams, who have told these girls they are worthy of love, of romance, while in reality the choice of men available to these young women is far from being aspirational to anyone. Like Savita’s brother, Mangya, many young boys are jobless, whiling away time with friends at tobacco shops. And those who are happen to have a government job, are treated like royalty. By luck of being born, and getting to pursue their desires, patriarchy continues to widen the gap between genders, education may try to keep closing said gap, but the institution is just too strong.
